On this day we celebrate the fact that the peoples of Europe now cooperate in order to maintain peace and solve common problems. The date is chosen because the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, on 9 May 1950, gave a speech that proved to be the first step towards the present European Union. The European Flag consists of 12 stars; the number of stars will remain unchanged independent of the number of Member States. The European Anthem is the prelude to "Ode to Joy" from the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven.
