What on earth are they?

I've been a busy bee just lately, which is why I've not blogged much. In fact, I've just come back from Paris, where I took this photo at a local market. I've never seen either of these two vegetables before, the orange onion-shaped one or the weird cabbagey one. Anyone have a clue what they are?


I'll post more about Paris (and Italy) later in the week, once I've unpacked my cases and got my act together.

Here's a link I found about the first one - according to that, it's called Romanesco broccoli or Roman cauliflower.

For the second one I googled "red squash", and came with a very similar looking vegetable called "red kuri squash":

That's a rare find..and the broccoli resembles a a conifer...my search for it also fetched the same Romanesco one...

Very strange, really.
It's a kind of a broccoli.
God knows how is its' taste like.

calabrese - they are starting to grow in greece too, broco-flower to some people

Calabrese is different I think. Like normal broccoli, but larger.
