It's getting hotter

The first few days after I arrived in Athens were quite pleasant, but not quite hot enough to qualify as Greek summer (27°C or 80°F during the day and down to 22°C or 72°F at night).

Yesterday, however, I spotted that we finally hit 30°C (86°F) so summer is definitely on its way. Bring it on, is what I say!

The two men you can see on the posterboard below the temperature display are Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis and leader of the opposision George Papandreou. The posters are part of their respective parties' campaigns for the European elections on Sunday.

We finally have a day with no rain, but the temp is only 60F. Not so great for the season's first swim meet. Fortunately, the Monkey skipped so that he could play in the big lacrosse tournament. I stood on deck with the cold, cold swimmers for five hours and am now ready for a hot cup of something and a NAP.

Go enjoy the sun for me!

@ Karen: Ouch! 60F certainly isn't warm enough for swimming. You guys are very brave! I'll be thinking of you when I'm lying on the beach later today ;-)

@ Jeanette: 13C isn't bad for winter - better than 15C (60F) in summer!

athens is a nightmare in the summer - in all my years in greece, i dont think i've ever spent my summer moths in the city, even though i lived and worked in athens for more than three years

Lucky you! We had 35ºC and in less than a week temperature dropped to 20ºC... and some cloudy skies in June too!...

@ Mediterranean Kiwi: I'm the exact opposite - I've always loved Athens in summer, even during a heatwave :-)

@ JM: Ohhhh from 35C to 20C, that's cruel! I hope we don't inherit your weather!!!

@ Unseen Rajastan: 45C is indeed very high, especially if it's also quite humid. It can get as hot as that in Athens, but the heat is dry so it's a bit more bearable if you take sensible precautions.

@ Palmtreefanatic: Yeah indeed :-)

@ Sandi: One thing you don't need to worry about is not seeing the sun ;-)

Well done on the currency ordering - does this mean your tix have arrived?

It is equally HOT here Tinsie!!! I need a cold beer now hehehehe...

Hi Tinsie, no tix - I think I can't check-in on-line which is a pain. I just have the itinery but I have a half day so if I turn up early, it won't be a problem. I just also ordered some books on Amazon - pray I get them on time.... still pretending to be organised ;)

Speak soon x Sandi

Hi Tinsie! Luckier than here; just 16º right now! And Papandreou won...

Blogtrotter (not me, I’m stuck here ;)) is profiting from the holidays in Lisbon this week and has a tour of Lake Galve, one of the beautiful lakes near Trakai, to show you! Hope you enjoy and have a great week!

@ Shionge: A cold beer, or a cold coke, or a cold glass of water... or perhaps an ice-cream hehe ;-)

@ Sandi: You should still be able to check in online in you have a confirmation number, you don't need an actual ticket for that. Just make sure you have a reservation!

@ Loops: Sounds pretty grim. I guess I don't have to worry about my flowers getting watered...

@ GMG: 16C is pretty cold for the time of year - I thought Portugal would be warmer. Hope the sun starts shining soon!
