Mamma Mia

Typical - you wait 20 years for a father and then three show up at once.

Seeing as the weather has taken a turn for the worse, I thought I'd stay out of the rain and catch a film at my local cinema. Surprisingly enough, considering I've not been to the movies in ages, there weren't that many films that I liked the sound of, so I opted for a touch of summer and booked a ticket to see Mamma Mia.

Overall, it was quite enjoyable, although there were a number of things that bugged me, for example:

* The stupid name for the island ("Kalokairi", which is Greek for "summer" - oh purleeze);
* Everyone seems to commute to the mainland in fishing boats, carrying their belongings & shopping in baskets;
* The taxis look like they came straight out of the 60's although the locals drink beer that first came out in the 90's;
* The villagers are picking olives in the middle of summer;
* The insides of all the houses are painted a turquoisey blue;
* Knowing Me, Knowing You has been cut out of the film in favour of dialogue (boooo);
* Meryl Streep is way too old to have ever dated Colin Firth;
* Pearce Brosnan's voice is awful.

Other than that, it's a decent feel-good film with quite a few laughing-out-loud moments and a happy ending, and I left the cinema with a big smile on my face. Not sure you can ask for more from 2 hours in a dark room (or maybe you can - ahem). The island scenery is stunning (just like Skopelos and Skiathos in real life), the singing is quite good, the dancing is better, and I'm now in love with both Pierce Brosnan (who cares that he can't sing, he's still hot-hot-hot) and Stellan SkarsgÄrd. Awwwww.

Has anyone else seen it? What did you think?

P.S. You can read Indie's review of the West End show here.

I love Brosnan as well but Colin Firth is gorgeous!!!!I love him.For me he is always Mr.Darcy. I've see Pride and Prejudice a million times because of him as well as Love Actually,Brigit Jones etc...Mamma Mia was quite good. I agree about the singing but who knew Streep could sing like that. I preferred the play. Absolutely amazing.If any of you are in London or visiting London,then you should go and see it. You'll you singing along within the first 5 minutes and dancing in the aisles by the end ;-)

@ Sandi: Bonjour ma cherie :-) How's Paris? Colin Firth's good, but Pierce Brosnan's definitely hotter. You've got to see Mamma Mia, it's a good laugh. I'm seeing Sex and the City next.

@ Indie: You know I've never seen Colin Firth's Mr Darcy? My top Mr Darcy's are Matthew MacFadyen and (phoarrrr) Martin Henderson. But perhaps I'll change my mind when I see Colin Firth in the role.

You never said anything about dancing in the aisles!!

Paris -c'est magnifique! if only!!? it's still work and lots of meetings, generally working until 8pm then DVD in the hotel...not my idea of 'fun'!

I'm still firmly in the Colin Firth fan club - Pierce Brosnan-NEVER, NEVER, NEVER! I didn't even like him as Bond!

@ Mandi: I really can't see how anyone could not like it. Beautiful scenery, great songs, fun story, a man for every taste, what's not to like? Hehe.

I'd not seen the link for Artful Blogging, but I'll check it out. Thanks for letting me know xx

@ Shionge: If you like Abba songs, it's a must :-)

@ Sandi: Uh oh. Paris doesn't sound like too much fun when you put it like that. Perhaps we should organise another weekend some time soon to keep you going.

P.S. I can't believe you just said that about Pierce Brosnan - he was the cewlest Bond ever!!

The BBC classic with Colin Firth is fabulous. Have two copies if you'd like one.
The newest version is great but too Hollywood for my taste. Wasn't he in Spooks?I also say him in the black comedy Death at a funeral. Not bad.
There was dancing in the aisles at the theatrical play. FANTASTIC!!!!
Can u guess what I'm listening to at this very moment????HE HE HE

I know the feeling - I'd been meaning to go see it for ages but kept putting it off, and then I started worrying that I wouldn't be able to see it on the big screen if I put it off much longer. But I reckon it'd be just as enjoyable on DVD - I've already added it to my Amazon wish list :-)

I've seen it and liked it but didn't exactly love it. Another big time problem is that it seems to be set in the present, the daughter is only 20, yet the Mom and the main characters seem to have been through some sort of hippie peace and love, or at least post-punk era, when the daughter actually would have been conceived in the late 80s! Oh well, it was fun anyway.

I think the movie's probably set around the late 70's to early 80's to go with the soundtrack (which would explain the vintage transport on the island, the villagers's oufits etc.) but then they made references to modern-day topics (i.e. internet and web pages) which weren't around then.

Oh well. It was fun to watch anyway even if there was very little depth to it :-)
